HERMANTOWN, Minn. (KQDS-TV) — Iron Workers Local 512 expanded its training center in Hermantown on Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, to accommodate growing classes and provide more space for hands-on training.
The 100-by-70-foot addition will allow the union to train future generations of ironworkers in a larger, safer environment.
Union management said the expanded facility will give trainees more opportunities to work with steel and metal construction through real-life examples and hands-on instruction.
The previous training space could not accommodate the growing number of classes and created safety concerns, according to the union.
“In the old shop we were tripping over each other. You couldn’t do multiple things at one time. Now it’s spread out,” said Barry Davies, business manager for Ironworkers Local 512. “There’s a lot of different facets in the ironworker trade, so we’re able to do all of it in a safe manner.”
The expansion is expected to help the union continue preparing apprentices and future ironworkers for careers in the trade.
