At the request of the Steel Erectors Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity, Iron Workers Executive Director of Safety and Health Steve Rank provided a two-day presentation on the “Deadly Dozen” hazards on Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Attendees reviewed many steel erection safety & regulatory issues and photographs from various job sites, with Rank and IMPACT Eastern Regional Director Mark Thomas facilitating discussion and answering questions.
More than 100 people attended the meeting at Local 401 in Philadelphia, and participants ranged from Tuesday's group of ironworkers, steel erector contractors, general contractor safety representatives, operating engineers and aerial lift and safety company representatives, to a group of 26 OSHA compliance officers on Wednesday morning. In addition, Local 401 Apprenticeship Coordinator Frank Marsh conducted training in signal man and rigging on Wednesday afternoon .
Following the meeting, Susan Dachowski, Vice President of the Steel Erectors Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity, thanked Steve Rank and IMPACT for traveling to Philadelphia for the presentation. She said that Steve "Did a great job, both in his presentation to his audience, as well as answering questions that were asked," and that "Having Mark Thomas present was invaluable. He was very engaging with not only the ironworkers, but the contractors and the OSHA officers. He was a great compliment to Steve in answering questions about our industry."
Dachowski went on to say that "We cannot say enough to compliment the many great things IMPACT has to offer our companies and our men – your men. Steve’s presentation was a good example of just one of them. We look forward to introducing our membership and our Alliance to additional learning opportunities in the future."
